Prior to getting pregnant, I tried to stay my healthiest, but if I got sick, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Once I became pregnant, knowing there weren’t many medications I could take if I did get sick, I made sure I was doing everything I could to stay healthy. They definitely weren’t anything major, but little things I knew that could help my body prepare for this little one.
1. Stay active
Whether this is running, teaching fitness classes, going to the gym alone, or walking. I made sure I was staying active most days, helping my immune system would benefit from it!
2. Keeping my diet full of nutrients.
I didn’t necessarily enjoy eating those fruits and veggies all the time, but I made sure not to give in to all my junk food cravings and ate nutritious meals. During the first trimester, it was much harder when I couldn’t stomach some of the veggies. However, I would put spinach in smoothies, and try to eat veggies for lunch and dinner every night. Of course, I did still give in to my cravings sometimes and ate the junk food
3. Take a prenatal.
Prior to getting pregnant, I didn’t necessarily take vitamins like I should have. I took prenatal vitamins since I went off birth control, just in case, but wasn’t so great about it. If I forgot it, oh well.
Once we decided we wanted to start a family and I became pregnant, I knew I needed to do better with this because of all a prenatal vitamin offers to my baby. I tried many kinds of prenatal vitamins to see which I enjoyed the most. Smarty Pants actually has a prenatal vitamin in gummy form! I don’t have a hard time taking pills, but some that I had tried previously just tasted disgusting.
I loved the taste of the Smarty Pants prenatal. I knew I was getting all the vitamins my baby needed, but also enjoying a little gummy pill every day! They tasted like candy, and on more than one occasion, I wanted to eat multiple!
Smarty Pants Prenatal Vitamins are free of high fructose cory syrup, articial colors, preservatives, sweeteners, and flavors. They are a full multivitamin, complete with Omega 3 EPA & DHA, as well as Vitamins D3 and B12. Smarty Pants All-In-One Prenatal vitamins are gluten free as well, and have orange, lemon, and strawberry banana flavors! Mmmm!
4. Drink Up.
No, not alcohol. Instead, your body needs even more water and staying hydrated needs to be at the top of your to do list. I found out the hard way (quite a few times) what can happen if you aren’t hydrated during pregnancy. The uterus is a muscle, so just like any other muscle can act up and cause grief if you aren’t hydrated, so can this. I had a few days where sharp pains were common, but only after realizing I wasn’t drinking enough did it get better.
5. Go to the doctor.
This goes without saying, but make sure you are going to all your prenatal visits. Yes, they are short and you often think they are pointless, but the doctors schedule them for a reason. They need to make sure you’re gaining enough weight, blood pressure is ok, baby measuring on track. Just because you may not notice something is off doesn’t mean they won’t. I was thankful that they took the necessary actions when I said she wasn’t moving as much as usual and got me strapped to a fetal monitor to make sure things were ok. You don’t want to risk anything when you are caring for another life!
Lucky for one of you, I’m giving away one bottle of Prenatal Vitamins on behalf of Smarty Pants. Enter below for your chance to win! Remember, prenatal vitamins aren’t just for pregnancy. They are to be used postpartum, too, as well as before you are even pregnant and may be trying. Perhaps you have someone else to give them too! Enter away!
