In case you missed part 1, catch it here! We last left off with me being sent home, only to have the contractions really intensify and now I couldn’t catch a break.
At 1:30 am, the pain had now gotten to a point that I had been shaking and shivering then sweating the next moment. I felt so nauseous and each contraction got worse. I decided I needed to call the doctor and go back to the hospital. I just couldn’t do it anymore. After calling the doctor, I threw up everywhere in the room before making it to the bathroom.
We arrived at the hospital at 2 and I was a disaster through each contractions. I never thought I’d be in that much pain, or that it would make me make noise! haha The nurses set me up in triage, again, before checking me and saying I was 2-3 cm. I honestly was about to die. How did I not progress with how ridiculously strong these contractions were! She again gave me pain meds, which didn’t work, and I was crying out through each one. At 3:30, she said I had to be at 4 cm to be admitted and checked me. She declared I was 3-4 cm, and I think she was just being nice. She knew how much pain I was in! She said they’d admit me and gave me new medicine to try and help the pain, but again, it didn’t work. I had now not only been so exhausted but in ridiculous pain for so long. We were admitted and in our room by 4, which is when they called the doctor. At 4:15, after I’m sure hearing me scream, they called the anesthesiologist, which was music to my ears! He came at 4:30 and by 5:00 am I was pain free! I didn’t have high hopes for the epidural because none of the other pain meds worked, but goodness the epidural takes everything away! Aaron and I both tried to sleep- he was successful and I was not. I just kept thinking, and my back was still in so much pain just from all the contractions I went through.
From 5:00-8:00am, I was in and out and nurses were in and out. I was given Pitocin to speed things up, and when I heard nurses say I would have a baby by lunchtime, I just couldn’t believe it. I was checked at 8 am and was now 7 cm. Knowing the last few go quicker, I sent Aaron to get our bags from the car and we waited. At 9am, I was checked and was now 9 cm. The doctor came in around 10, said I was 10 cm and would be pushing soon. I was exhausted at this point and just kept thinking how I didn’t know I’d be able to push without any energy. My acid reflux was also beyond terrible, I couldn’t have anything to drink, I hadn’t eaten since 5 the night before, which I proceeded to throw up before going to the hospital, and then I puked even more around 10 am. I was a mess, ha! At least I didn’t feel pain anymore!
At 10:45, the doctor said I was going to push and the nurse practiced with me before I started. Honestly, the set up wasn’t at all what I thought or what movies show! It was just me, Aaron, and a nurse. At this point, I pushed for about 20 minutes, and then told to stop. I could feel the contractions but it wasn’t enough to be able to focus on where I needed to push. They turned down the epidural and I started pushing again at 11:50. Aaron was a huge help and got me through it when I didn’t think I could do it anymore! I pushed until 12:15 when they rushed around trying to get the doctor. Annabelle was so close and I was told I couldn’t push until the doctor came in. Um, excuse me?! It’s hard to push during contractions, but even harder to not push! I actually started screaming for the doctor from my room, haha! He finally came in and looked at me only to realize he needed to hurry! He quickly got ready, they took apart the bottom of the bed to deliver, and 2 pushes later, Annabelle arrived at 12:21 pm.
I was given skin to skin, delayed cord cutting, and she was checked out. We stayed there for about an hour or two, until they told us they had so many deliveries that we had to move rooms. It was a bummer because these were so nice, but it was alright- I finally had my baby! I did tear because she came so fast and needed to be stitched up.
So from when I felt the first real contraction after my dr. appointment, I was in labor for about 25 hours. It wasn’t all terrible, but it was long and I definitely didn’t expect that. I wouldn’t trade anything, though, because it brought me my sweet little angel who I cannot get enough of!
I’ll fill you in on our first few days in another post!
