There are some recipes that you just don’t mess with. I like to call these “classics.” One of those is my all time favorite Rice Krispy Treats. I could eat these all the time, but never really think to make them. They are one of those things that I never seemed to have the ingredients for.
Last week, as I was grocery shopping, I spotted Crisp Rice cereal (generic for Rice Krispy’s). I knew I had marshmallows at home, and thought this would be a fun dessert to make.
Then, I was a rebel. I decided not to just stick to the original. I decided to spice things up and make it hopefully even more delicious. Obviously my plan was to incorporate something else I loved just as much; cake mix.
Cake Mix Rice Krispy Treats
Not only are they really easy, I promise they will be eaten up before you know it. I was shocked when I went in to grab one at my friend’s house, and more than half of the pan was gone- within 20 minutes of me being there. I was told to stop bringing “crack” over. No thanks, I love to share! What’s even better is they take about 15 minutes to make from start to finish!
- 3 tablespoons butter
- One small bag of marshmallows, or half of a large bag
- About 5 cups Rice Krispy Cereal- my cups are usually heaping!
- 1 1/2 cups yellow cake mix
- Sprinkles (optional)
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
As soon as butter has melted, add in the marshmallows to melt. Keep an eye on them and continually mix them.
Once marshmallows have just about melted, add in your yellow cake mix! Stir until it combines.
Immediately add in your cereal. I chose to dump both into a new bowl in order to mix!
Continue to mix until it is all clumped together. At this point, add in some sprinkles and stir. Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out (they are just to add a bit of color! haha not turn the entire thing one color).
Press into a pan of your size. I prefer 9×13 dish so the pieces aren’t too huge, but you can choose whatever you’d like! Sprinkle some more sprinkles on top!
Let sit for 20-30 minutes before inhaling enjoying one.
