At the very beginning of October, I asked for you to keep my dad in your thoughts. I didn’t go into too much detail, but now I am.
One morning, he awoke to having no feeling in his hand and wrist, and unable to move his arm. He had severe pain, and had no idea why; he had gone to bed feeling fine the night before. Immediately after this happened, Matt left work and I left jury duty to get him to the hospital (My mom was in Oregon at the time). They ran all sorts of tests, and it’s pretty much been a nightmare for him ever since. Of course, they did rule out major things while at the ER (stroke, blood clot, etc.), but they sent him home with limited pain killers, and pretty much just told him to deal with it.
My dad still has limited feeling in his hands, and can’t use his fingers. He has been off work since then, and has seen a neurologist, orthopedic, and a neck surgeon. Unfortunately, a few doctors couldn’t have cared less about him, and were quite rude. Within the past two weeks, his neck has gotten severely worse, and he can’t move his head up. It basically goes as far up as if you were looking at the computer in yoru lap. He has limited capabilities using his hand, and has been very frustrated with this entire process.
Twenty years ago, my dad had neck surgery, so he went back to this same doctor to try to find a cause. It was surprising when the doctor told him he couldn’t even see what he performed surgery on 20 years ago- it was all gone. He ran more tests, and was determined to find the answer; he wasn’t pushing my dad off to the side, and was on the ball right then and there.
Countless tests later, and my dad is finally having surgery today. We have hopes that it will allow him to regain movement in his arm, and feeling in his hands. It’s been one of the hardest things to see him in so much pain; we haven’t been able to even give him a hug without hurting him. He will be having surgery on 4 vertebrae in his spine today, with hopes that he will come home on Sunday. Of course surgery is risky, but we know he is in good hands, and trust this doctor. I have faith that, though he will be in pain at the beginning, his pain will subside and he will be back to normal!
As to what caused it, no one is too sure. In the ER, they did mention a few bulging disks, but nothing further. The neck surgeon believes that he may have slept on it wrong, putting pressure on his nerves, and triggering all of this to come about very suddenly.
Please keep my dad in your thoughts for the time being <3 The neck surgery is pretty invasive, and has a 6-8 week recovery we believe. We are all very hopeful and really like this surgeon. I’m heading down to the hospital today to be with my mom while my dad is operated on. Depending on the time, I am hoping to stay and see him in recovery, but then I have to get home for some Trick or Treaters
I can’t wait until he’s this happy again!
