Some days call for chocolate without any particular reason. With the holiday season upon us, I wanted to try something new with my brownies. Don’t get me wrong, they are delicious the way they are. Having a soft, chewy inside, with a layer of chocolate frosting on top is seriously decadent. But, I wanted more.
While walking through the stores, one particular candy jumps out this time of year: Candy Canes. Of course, I can only eat a few of these a year, but they definitely add a pop of peppermint wherever they are added, and have the bonus of sprucing up the look of your dessert.
I may have also gone over board on buying Oreos for some upcoming baking extravaganzas, but when that pretty blue package is sitting on the shelf staring at you, what’s a girl to do?. There was no doubt in my mind, that adding these to brownies would be one delicious treat.
I’m not one to bake everything from scratch. Cookies are absolutely made from scratch, but other desserts I sometimes get away with using a box to start: brownies and cake. I mean, it’s just easy, and sometimes more delicious.
One of my favorite stores sells the most delicious brownies. I’ve tried them all, and even tested them out with others, but Aldi brand will always have my heart. (Side note: Aldi is my favorite grocery story out there; if you have one and haven’t tried it, you must!) Okay, back to the ooey, gooey, amazing chocolate goodness.
Though Aaron and I are gobbling these up pretty fast, I did share some with my elderly neighbor, which made her day. I’m telling you, they are all around delicious. So, what are you waiting for? Scroll down and find the recipe!
Oreo Crumble Peppermint Brownies
|Prep time||10 minutes|
|Cook time||25 minutes|
|Total time||35 minutes|
|Misc||Child Friendly, Freezable|
- Oreo Cookies- 1 package
- Peppermint Candy Canes
- 1 container Chocolate Icing (I did not use this much, maybe about half, but feel free to use as much or little as you'd like)
- Favorite Brownie Mix (plus all necessary ingredients to make that)
- Christmas Sprinkles
|Make the brownie mix according to the directions.|
|After mixing the batter, crush one Candy Cane in your food processor. If you don't have one, don't fret! Simply crush it by: stepping on it, using a can of food to smack it, or use a rolling pin over it.|
|Mix the peppermint bits into the brownie mix, pour into an 8x13 pan, and bake as long as the box tells you (I enjoy desserts on the less done side, so I start with 5 minutes less than they say). Once the timer goes off, stick a toothpick in to make sure it comes clean!|
|In your food processor (or using the steps above), crush 5 Oreos with 2 Candy Canes.|
|After the brownies are done and cooled, icing them with your favorite icing. I use milk chocolate, but it's completely up to you!|
|On top of the icing, sprinkle the Oreo and Candy Cane crumbles, and top with desired sprinkles!|
Side note: If you would rather make brownies from scratch, go right ahead! I should try that one day… These also freeze well, and are just as delicious when you thaw them. Make sure you freeze them soon after finishing them so they aren’t stale going into the freezer.
