Vacation began with a 2:30 am wake up call, where we piled in the cars and hit the road. In Matt’s truck (as he drove) was Shelby, him, and Aaron. Aaron and I ended up not getting much sleep the night before after some unforeseen circumstances (personal and not exactly related to us, though it was our family). It was hard to put those thoughts out of our mind and get some sleep. Because of that, we split up so we could get some sleep. My mom drove her car while my dad and I snoozed away.
We arrived in Virginia Beach at 10:15, welcoming the views of the ocean, and the smell of salt water as soon as we rolled down the windows. Our first stop was a Wine and Beer store. Clearly PA doesn’t make enough great beer for Aaron and Matt. Shelby (Matt’s girlfriend) can’t have Gluten, and they had a lot of beer she could drink, too. Next stop was Trader Joes. Ha, love that I go there on vacation. PA, again, doesn’t sell the alcohol in stores, but I had my favorite Moscato (Blue Fin- I suggest you try some if you have it in your Trader Jo’s ) from TJ’s in Columbus, so I had to get it again. One more stop to the beer store and we hit up Applebee’s for lunch. It was delicious. I had the Quesadilla burger; it was a fantastic choice.
We made our way down to the public beach right past our house as we couldn’t get the keys until 2:30. Matt, Shelby, Aaron and I hung out there, going in the water a bit, and just talking while my parents went to wait on the house keys. We made it to the house and unpacked the truck prior to my uncle and his girlfriend arriving, did some more unpacking of their cars, and then my parents arrive so we could take things in the house.
After all the unpacking of cars, we made our way in the pool, bar area, and hot tub. We also made a few trips to the beach. Definitely an advantage of having a gate that leads from pool deck to the beach. It was positively amazing.
After a dinner of pizza (so good!), a storm rolled in, and we were forced to retreat back inside. Thankfully, it’s a huge house so we all were ok with it. Day 1 ended with lots of laughs, and we couldn’t wait for Day 2!
Day 2 was our anniversary! We headed down to the beach around 10ish, where Matt, Shelby, Aaron and I played some Bocci and frisbee before others came down. It was a gorgeous morning, but the rain came later that afternoon. It was basically just drizzling, and some stayed on the beach, but we just stayed on the deck.
A few hours later, the skies cleared up, and it was a gorgeous night! While everyone else hung out at the pool before going to dinner at Baja restaurant by our house, Aaron and I got ready and headed out to dinner on our own.
Antipasto dish that was delicious!

I chose to sleep in a bit, but then got up and started the day with another 3 mile run. I’m used to staying at Virginia Beach with the boardwalk, and I loved being able to run on that and see the beach. It’s a bit of a bummer to have to run on the road, and therefore not even see the beach. I am not a huge fan of runs on the sand, but will do them. It was just nice to have the option to run on concrete and still be by the beach while staying at the resorts (we stayed in Sandbridge which is about 25 minutes from the boardwalk and resort area).
Monday began hot! Since Sunday wasn’t so great, we were all anxious to get to the beach. We spent the entire day there, before picking up our stuff, walking the 20 feet back to the house, and going in the pool. Monday was also our “Jimmy Buffet” night my aunts put together. They had to miss him in concert at home, so they wanted to have a night at the beach.
We enjoyed some appetizers by the pool (fried zucchini, chips and salsa and guacamole, and a bean salsa) and relaxed for a few more hours. After dinner of hot dogs, sausage, and hamburgers, we continued to dance the night away, spend time in the hot tub, and then my aunt pulled out her “surprise” she kept telling us about.
In the strip district, she bought us the floating lanterns to set off! It was so cool to see about 8 of them go off into the sky. We actually had people from other houses come outside and watch! They were cheering us on as some took longer than others to get going. It was a great end to a perfect day!
See you tomorrow with the ending of our beach trip!
