Hi everyone! Hope you are having a fantastic Thursday!
Why I work out at Home
This is a topic I have wanted to talk about for a few months now. It came up over the summer, shortly after starting to teach group fitness classes. Little background- I never worked out and hated track during high school, went to college and fell in love with cardio, running, and lifting. After college, I joined Planet Fitness while I student taught, but once that was over, I never went to the gym (it was about a 20 minute drive). That didn’t mean I didn’t work out. In fact, I think I was actually more fit when I quit going to Planet Fitness, and worked out at home.
Going to the gym worked for me, and I loved the equipment. However, I was very lucky that my parents had an elliptical, rower, full body weight machine, dumbbells, and a treadmill. Honestly, it was all I needed. I started doing my work out at home a few years ago, and kept them up. I had no problem going to my “gym” which was the basement and completing a workout. In fact, I worked out more by having it in my basement and having zero excuses. I treated it like a gym when I went down, and completed my workout with minimal interruptions. I had a plan for being down there, and did it before coming upstairs.
When I moved, it was hard to keep that fitness up, but I found a way by running more outside, or heading to my parents. Of course the idea of joining the gym 2 minutes away definitely entered my mind, and I really wanted to join! But, I just didn’t have the money to spend $40 a month on a membership, when I didn’t really need that discipline. I slowly built up our “gym” and now we have dumbbells, kettlebell, stability ball, treadmill, and elliptical. That’s really all I need! Since starting to teach my classes, I do have access to the gym (for free) and have used it a few times, but I found I just don’t need that atmosphere. I don’t need someone else working out beside me to make me work out. I don’t need to have someone on the treadmill next to me to run my fastest, and can simply head to the basement and do my work out at home, where most times I look like a total mess 😉 .

Everyone is different, and I know many others who need that atmosphere to put everything else to the side and get their workout in. That’s ok!
Listen, as long as you are working out and moving, I don’t care how you do it!
Maybe you do bodyweight workouts at home and then go walking or running outside. That’s all free and is completely a workout! Everyone’s budget is different, and if you can afford a gym membership and it’s what you need, then do it! I feel like my basement is my “gym” and it works for me. I don’t do workouts upstairs in the family room as I know I won’t put forth all my effort. It’s important to designate a spot to workout in so you are focused, and not thinking of everything else to do.
For me, I would rather wake up and walk downstairs to get a workout in. I do better if I’m not facing others because I tend to get more nervous. There’s obviously no right answer, just remember to move! You are making that effort to better your health
Please keep in mind that the equipment we have has been bought over numerous years. We were lucky to get an elliptical for free from someone Aaron works with, I had been asking for dumbbells for Christmas for years before we were married, and the treadmill was my gift last year and was found on Craigslist! Keep Craigslist in mind for fitness equipment- it’s a great place to get used things for super cheap!
